The original town plan put downtown Torrance on diagonals around Sartori Avenue and El Prado, crossing the freight rail line at an angle. Those blocks are short, angled, and parked on both sides, so the driver takes the handoff on Torrance Boulevard, Carson Street, or a nearby lot rather than trying to work the diagonal itself.

The Riviera and the Peninsula

The Hollywood Riviera and Walteria climb toward the Palos Verdes hill on narrow switchbacks with tight turns and short driveways, and the Peninsula above them is harder again. Rolling Hills is a gated city with guarded entrances, and Palos Verdes Drive South crosses the Portuguese Bend landslide, where the roadway shifts and repairs are constant.

The streets near Torrance Beach and Riviera Village are narrow and metered, and in December the Christmas light display in the Seaside Ranchos tract, known locally as Candy Cane Lane, draws slow traffic and parked cars onto the surrounding blocks for weeks.
