The Best Way to Transport a Luxury or High-Value Vehicle: A Complete Guide

Posted on 09/15/2025

When you own a luxury vehicle, exotic car, or classic automobile, shipping it means protecting something you’ve invested heavily in. The right transport method for a high-value vehicle means your prized car arrives exactly as it left. Professional auto transport services handle expensive automobiles properly, using enclosed carriers, specialized equipment, and experienced drivers who understand what they’re working with. Whether you’re moving across the country, buying a vehicle from far away, or heading to a car show, choosing the right transport method keeps your car safe and maintains its value.

Below, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know, including choosing between enclosed and open carriers and getting your luxury car ready for transport.

Understanding Luxury Vehicle Transportation Options

Enclosed vs. Open Car Carriers: Which is Right for Your High-Value Vehicle?

The decision between enclosed transport and open transport represents the most critical choice when shipping luxury vehicles. Enclosed carriers provide complete protection from weather conditions, road debris, and environmental exposure through fully covered trailers. This method is the gold standard for transporting luxury cars, exotic vehicles, and classic cars.

Enclosed car shipping utilizes hard-sided or soft-sided enclosed trailers. Hard-sided enclosed carriers offer superior protection with solid walls and roofing, ideal for valuable exotic cars and classic automobiles. These specialized trailers typically accommodate two to six cars, ensuring individualized attention and secure positioning during transport. Enclosed car carriers also provide enhanced security features and climate-controlled environments that prevent damage from extreme temperatures.

Open car carriers expose vehicles to the elements during transit. While more economical, open transport may not provide adequate protection for luxury car transport needs.

Professional Auto Transport Services vs. DIY Options

Professional car transport services offer distinct advantages over driving your luxury vehicle long distances. Cross-country driving adds significant mileage that affects resale value and requires additional maintenance. Professional transportation eliminates risks, including accidents, mechanical breakdowns, and time investment.

Transport companies understand the specific requirements of exotic cars, including low ground clearance considerations, proper tie-down techniques, and loading procedures that protect custom features. Professional carriers also maintain specialized insurance coverage designed for vehicle transportation, providing protection levels that exceed standard auto insurance policies.

Door-to-Door vs. Terminal-to-Terminal Delivery Methods

Door-to-door service picks up your luxury vehicle at your specified location and delivers it directly to your destination. This premium service eliminates additional handling and reduces exposure to potential damage. For luxury car transport, door-to-door delivery minimizes the number of times your vehicle must be moved.

Terminal-to-terminal delivery requires dropping off and picking up your vehicle at designated facilities. While this reduces costs, it introduces additional handling as vehicles are moved on and off storage lots, increasing the risk of potential damage to luxury vehicles and exotic cars.

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company for Your Luxury Vehicle

Selecting a qualified transport company represents the foundation of successful luxury car shipping. The right service provider combines specialized expertise, proper credentials, and proven performance with high-value vehicles.

Essential Qualifications and Certifications to Look For

Legitimate car shipping companies must maintain proper federal licensing. Every professional transport company should provide their USDOT number, which allows you to verify their registration status, safety record, and compliance history through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration database.

Experience specifically with luxury vehicles, classic cars, and exotic automobiles distinguishes specialized transporters from general auto shipping services. Ask potential transport companies about their carrier vetting processes. Professional services implement rigorous screening that evaluates driver credentials, equipment condition, and safety records.

Insurance Coverage Requirements for High-Value Vehicles

Comprehensive insurance coverage becomes critically important when transporting luxury cars. Federal regulations require minimum cargo insurance, but these baseline amounts often prove inadequate for high-value automobiles. Professional luxury car transport services maintain enhanced coverage levels specifically designed to protect expensive vehicles.

Verify that your chosen transport company carries cargo insurance with limits matching or exceeding your vehicle’s value. Request written documentation of current insurance coverage, including policy details and the insurance provider’s contact information. Understanding the claims process before transportation begins ensures you know how to proceed if damage occurs.

Reading Reviews and Verifying Company Credentials

Customer reviews provide valuable insights into luxury car transport services. Look for detailed feedback specifically mentioning high-value vehicles, exotic cars, or classic automobiles. Pay attention to comments about communication quality, delivery timing, and vehicle condition upon arrival.

Review multiple platforms, including Google reviews and Better Business Bureau ratings, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the company’s reputation. Verify company credentials by independently confirming licensing and insurance through the FMCSA database.

Preparing Your Luxury Vehicle for Safe Transportation

Documentation and Photography Requirements

Comprehensive documentation before shipping creates essential records of your vehicle’s condition. Take detailed photographs from multiple angles, including close-ups of all sides, wheels and tires, interior condition, and any existing damage. These photographs establish baseline condition evidence that proves invaluable if damage claims arise.

Date-stamp all documentation and maintain copies in multiple locations. Create a detailed condition report listing all existing scratches, dents, or other imperfections. For classic cars or customized vehicles, note all special components or modifications.

Vehicle Preparation Checklist for Transport

Proper vehicle preparation facilitates efficient pickup and helps prevent delays or complications during shipping:

  • Clean Your Vehicle Thoroughly: Wash and detail your luxury car inside and out before transport. Clean surfaces allow for accurate condition documentation and clear photography.
  • Remove Personal Belongings: Transport companies prohibit personal items in vehicles during shipping, as these items are not covered by cargo insurance and can shift during transport, potentially causing damage.
  • Address Mechanical Issues: Ensure your luxury vehicle is in good working condition with no fluid leaks. Check that the battery is fully charged and the vehicle starts and runs properly.
  • Secure or Remove Loose Parts: Any custom accessories, spoilers, or aftermarket components that aren’t permanently attached should be secured or removed before transport.
  • Disable Car Alarm Systems: Deactivate security systems and alarms that might activate during transport, as these can drain the battery and create complications for the transport driver.
  • Maintain Minimal Fuel Levels: Keep fuel at approximately one-quarter tank, providing enough for loading and unloading while minimizing weight.

Special Considerations for Classic Cars, Supercars, and Exotic Vehicles

Luxury vehicles with unique characteristics require additional preparation. Classic car transport demands special attention to vintage mechanical systems and original finishes. Low-clearance exotic cars need specialized equipment, including hydraulic lift gates that accommodate minimal ground clearance without risking undercarriage damage.

Customized vehicles with aftermarket modifications require clear communication about custom features that might affect loading or securing. For inoperable classic cars, specialized handling becomes necessary as these automobiles cannot be driven onto carriers, requiring advance notification and potentially incurring additional charges.

Which Cars Fall Into the Luxury Category?

Understanding which vehicles qualify for specialized luxury car transport helps determine appropriate service levels. Luxury vehicles encompass automobiles with high value, premium features, and requirements for enhanced care.

  • Exotic Cars and Supercars: Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Bugatti, and Pagani absolutely require enclosed carrier transport with specialized handling. These high-performance vehicles often feature extremely low ground clearance, carbon fiber components, and custom paint finishes that demand expert care and climate-controlled environments during shipping.
  • Luxury Performance Brands: Porsche, Mercedes-AMG, BMW M Series, and Audi RS models warrant enclosed shipping for maximum protection. These vehicles combine everyday usability with substantial value, making the additional cost of enclosed transport a worthwhile investment to protect against road debris and weather exposure.
  • Ultra-Luxury Automobiles: Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Maybach, and Aston Martin vehicles require white-glove transport services. These cars, featuring bespoke customization options, represent the pinnacle of automotive craftsmanship and demand the highest level of transportation care.
  • Classic and Vintage Automobiles: Collector cars and restored classics qualify for luxury transport services due to historical significance and restoration investment. Whether it’s a 1967 Corvette Stingray or a vintage Jaguar E-Type, these vehicles often contain irreplaceable original parts and represent years of meticulous restoration work that cannot be easily replicated if damaged.
  • Customized and Modified Vehicles: Extensively customized automobiles with significant aftermarket investments deserve enclosed transport protection. Vehicles with custom paint jobs, body kits, performance modifications, or show-quality finishes require the same level of care as factory luxury vehicles, regardless of the base model’s original value.

When determining your car shipping cost, there are a few factors that we take into account in order to provide you with an accurate price quote. The mileage between the origin and destination is the biggest factor that contributes to your total rate. In addition to the distance of your relocation, another factor is the type and condition of the vehicle being shipped. The final factor is the date that your vehicle will be ready for transport. There are also additional options, such as enclosed carrier and top-load service that can be added to your shipment at the time of booking for a higher level of service. The transit time for your shipment is based mostly on the mileage between the pickup and delivery location. Generally, every five hundred miles will add one day to the transit time - so for a 1,000 mile transport, the transit time would be 2-3 days. Check out our estimated transit times for a detailed view of approximate delivery times.

You may transport personal belongings in your car, as long as their total weight does not exceed 100 pounds and they are stored in the trunk or back seat (below the window line). Please keep in mind that personal belongings are not covered by insurance if they are reported as damaged or missing.

You can always give us a call and ask one of our car shipping experts what your options are in terms of the schedule for your car transport.

The driver will get the car transporter as close to your door as he can legally and safely get. In most cases, the driver will be able to pickup and deliver directly to your door. Some cities may have restrictions on large trucks that prohibit them from driving into residential areas. Auto transport trucks are large and need lots of room to maneuver and turn around, so if access to the pickup or delivery location is restricted by narrow streets, low-hanging trees or tight turns, the driver may ask that you meet at a location nearby with a large parking lot, such as a grocery store.

Open transport is the most common car shipping method. There are two types of open-air transporters. The Majority of shipments are be made with 8-10 car carriers. Smaller carriers which hold 2-3 cars are used for shorter, local car moving. There is a broader network of carrier availability for open-air carriers since they are used more often. We suggest choosing enclosed car shipping methods when shipping classic, luxury or exotic vehicles. Enclosed vehicle transportation guarantees maximum protection from exposure to any open-air elements on the road. We suggest booking your enclosed transport in advance since carrier availability is limited. Read more about the difference between open and enclosed transport

RoadRunner Auto Transport specializes in shipping all types of vehicles including sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, minivans, oversized vehicles, antiques, classic cars, motorcycles, construction vehicles, inoperable cars and boats. If you are not sure whether or not we can ship your vehicle, you can give us a call to find out what we can do for you.

You should have about a quarter of a tank of gas in your car at the time of shipment. This leaves enough for the car to be loaded and unloaded but doesn't add much additional weight.

The Bill of Lading is a very important document used by car shipping companies that documents any pre-existing damage on the vehicle during the time of pickup. It also serves as a record of your contact info and the official agreement for transport. If you want to file any insurance claim regarding your shipment you will need the Bill of Lading.

Top load service is when your car is placed on the higher deck or level of an open auto transport trailer. This is considered to be preferable to the bottom load because the cars on the lower deck are at risk of possibly having fluid from the cars above leak on them.

Make sure your car has been completely cleaned, both inside and outside. This is particularly important because this will help the driver conduct their inspection in order to assess any pre-existing damage on your vehicle. You will also want to make there are no additional personal items in the vehicle unless you intend to ship those with the vehicle (remember those items must total less than 100 pounds combined and be kept below the window-line of the vehicle). Be sure to inform the driver of any special circumstances concerning the vehicle. Finally, make sure there is a quarter tank of gas in the car at the time it is picked up for shipment. Visit our car shipping checklist to make sure you are prepared for your vehicle shipment.

Yes, we can ship vehicles that are in non-running/inoperable condition. When inoperable cars are shipped, a special auto carrier is required that makes use of a winch which is connected to your car and slowly and safely pulls your vehicle onto the carrier. There is an additional fee for inoperable vehicles because of the special equipment and extra work involved with securing the vehicle onto the transporter. You can select the inoperable option on the online booking form or inform your shipping agent if you make your reservation by phone so that the proper arrangements can be made to accommodate a non-running vehicle.

We offer open car shipping and enclosed transport services services. Open car shipping is used much more frequently and is the type of auto transport that you see on the highway where carriers are hauling vehicles on two decks that are exposed. Enclosed transport services are when your vehicle is shipped in a trailer which has walls and a roof, they look like a larger version of a regular eighteen-wheeler. This method is recommended for luxury, exotic or classic cars.

Door-to-door car transport is the full-service delivery of your vehicle directly from the door at the pickup location to the door at the delivery location. Our drivers do their best to get as close as physically and legally possible to the pickup and delivery locations, but in certain instances there may be restrictions preventing them from being able to reach your door safely. Our transporters need ample space to maneuver and load/unload your vehicle. If your street is too narrow, or if there are hazards such as low-lining trees or power lines, drivers may ask that you meet them at a location nearby where they can safely load or unload your vehicle, such as a large parking lot or shopping center nearby.
